First of all, welcome to my Blog! I’d been wanting to set up a blog for some time, but felt silly without it having some sort of theme. Then it hit me. Why not a ‘Geek Blog?’
I’m not afraid of admitting I’m a Geek. You see, it’s not all that bad. In fact, I would probably categorize a large majority of the population as being at least some part ‘Geek.’ To me, the definition of a Geek is someone who tends to obsess over one or more subject matter. It often tends to lean towards technology or science, but doesn’t necessarily have to. For example, I’ve met numerous music Geeks who know nothing about computers and could give a crap about the great debate of Star Trek versus Star Wars.
So you might ask, “What’s the difference between a Geek and a Nerd?” First of all, I believe that Geeks have social skills. Geeks love to share their obsession, whether it be Star Trek, some sort of game, or even computers, so they have to be social. To me, Nerds are the book worms, the A students, people who are afraid of breaking the rules. The George McFly’s of the world. Not that there’s anything wrong with that… I’m just not one of them.
So now that we’ve got that established, let me tell you a little bit about me.
- I’m a software developer and I’ve spent my career of about 15 years working around computers and computer networks. I love the idea of computer networks and the ability to communicate through them.
- I spent a large part of my teenage years playing around with computer bulletin board systems (BBS’s) and even briefly worked for a company that wrote BBS software. Most of my best friends I met from the BBS’s.
- I’ve worked for a few different Internet Service Providers in the past and learned most of what I know about computer networking and Unix/Linux systems from them. Tech Support for dial-up customers is the worst!
- I’m a Mac guy. Some might say an Apple fanboy, though I’d disagree. I’ve used a lot of different systems over the years, Amiga’s, Windows PC’s, Unix-like OS’s, and then most recently the Mac. I love my Mac! It’s just like they say, “It just works.”
- I’ve been playing the guitar for about 5 years. I wouldn’t say I’m all that great at it, but I really enjoy it and feel like I’m still improving. I took lessons for a while, but haven’t since I moved. I’m considering starting again because it dramatically improved my playing.
- I’ve had my motorcycle license for almost 12 years now, though I didn’t ridden the whole time. I bought a new Yamaha YZF-R6S last summer and love it. It’s just like my last bike, a 99′ R6, only a little newer looking.
- I’ve logged 20 hours of flight time towards my pilot’s license but stopped the lessons after finally realizing how impractical it was to rent an airplane and fly it anywhere that I’d want to go. $700 to fly down to Tucson to visit my family and back? Ouch! Someday when I can afford my own plan I’ll probably start again.
- I love watching movies. I’ve got a decent home theatre set-up, complete with an XBox 360, a PlayStation 3, and a Series 3 TiVo.
- I’m sort of an HD addict if you can’t already tell. Almost everything I watch is in High Definition.
- I love gadgets, gizmos, electronic do-hickeys and tools. Even in the kitchen I’ve collected a respectable amount of tools and devices. I can’t get through a hardware store without buying at least one new tool.
- I’m a procrastinator. It took me 4 months after setting up this site for me to make my first post! I’m aware of my natural tendency to procrastinate though, so I try to make up for it.
So that’s enough about me for now. As for this blog, you can expect to see me posting about a variety of things. I’m sure I’ll post some movie reviews and product reviews, rants and thoughts, even things that might not even have anything Geek to do with it. But that’s O.K. It’s my blog and I’ll write what I want!
Thanks for reading!
